ASSOCIATED INFECTION OF MEDICAL IMPLANTS J.-H. Lee, H. Wang, M. Libera, and W.Y. Lee Stevens Institute of Technology, USA ABSTRACT This paper reports the exploration of microfabricated bioreactors (“microreactors”), as new in vitro tools for studying the complexity of biofilm-associated infection of implantable medical devices. We designed, fabricated, and evaluated microreactors in an iterative manner to assess the feasibility of studying interactions between Staphylococcus epidermidis and osteoblasts in the presence of surfaces relevant to implantable biomaterials.

Proteomics of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm matrix in a rat model of orthopedic implant-associated infection

The matrix proteins of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm have not been well defined. Previous efforts to identify these proteins were performed using in vitro systems. Here we use a proteomic approach to identify biofilm matrix proteins directly from infected bone implants using a rat model of orthopedic implant-associated S. aureus infection. Despite heavy presence of host proteins, a total of 28 ...

A Rat Model of Central Venous Catheter to Study Establishment of Long-Term Bacterial Biofilm and Related Acute and Chronic Infections

Formation of resilient biofilms on medical devices colonized by pathogenic microorganisms is a major cause of health-care associated infection. While in vitro biofilm analyses led to promising anti-biofilm approaches, little is known about their translation to in vivo situations and on host contribution to the in vivo dynamics of infections on medical devices. Here we have developed an in vivo ...

A Cellular Automata Model of Infection Control on Medical Implants.

S. epidermidis infections on medically implanted devices are a common problem in modern medicine due to the abundance of the bacteria. Once inside the body, S. epidermidis gather in communities called biofilms and can become extremely hard to eradicate, causing the patient serious complications. We simulate the complex S. epidermidis-Neutrophils interactions in order to determine the optimum co...

Antibacterial Modification of Intravascular Catheter Surface for the Prevention of Catheter-Associated Infection

Objective: Intravascular catheter-associated infection has been increasing hospitalization in post-surgery patients mainly due to microbial colonization of the catheter surface and formation of a superficial biofilm layer. The present study is aimed in developing an effective antibacterial device which can prevent colonization of organisms by modification of catheter. Methods: In the present st...

Implants modified with polymeric nanofibers coating containing the antibiotic vancomycin

Objective(S): Implant-related infections are disastrous complications in the clinic. One recent strategy to reduce the rate of infection is using the bioactive coating with an antibiotic. The purpose of these bioactive surfaces is to prevent bacterial adhesion to the implant and, consequently, the development of biofilm. In this study, vancomycin-loaded polymeric coating on imp...
